Context
An up-to-date fleet, but end of support is approaching
The company has 16 laptops and 3 virtual machines running Windows 7. With only six months left before end of support, we need to plan a migration without disrupting production.
The company only has a basic inventory of its IT fleet and installed software.
Solutions
Testing and phased upgrade
The client works in industrial IT across various fields (electronics, mechanics, software development, office tools) and needs a wide range of software to operate.
We began by deploying a GLPI instance and installing agents on the machines.
Once the software mapping was completed, we focused on validating the compatibility of critical software with Windows 10.
For older software—or those with no clear support status for Windows 10—we conducted tests on virtual machines. Printer drivers also received special attention.
Once all uncertainties were resolved, we began the migration, starting with the VMs (as they are easy to snapshot and back up), then coordinated with the client for the progressive update of the machines.
Results
An up-to-date and well-documented infrastructure
Ahead of schedule, the updates went smoothly without major issues. Business continuity was maintained, and the client now benefits from an up-to-date software and hardware inventory solution.
